Sports on the roof

The crowning glory of a visit to the museum is our spacious roof area, where school classes and groups can get really active once again. Whether it's a spontaneous game of football, a small basketball match or simply free play in the fresh air – here you can combine what you have experienced in the museum with exercise. The area offers enough space for all participants to let off steam, try things out or organise small competitions together.

The necessary sports equipment can be borrowed easily and free of charge at the museum ticket office, so nothing stands in the way of a sporting finale. Access to the roof is directly via the exhibition and is possible at any time. This makes a visit to the museum not only informative, but also a lively experience that ideally combines knowledge and exercise.

The picture was taken on the roof. Two children are playing on the roof with a soccer ball. The roof is covered with artificial turf. In the background, you can see Cologne from above.
The picture was taken in the entrance area. There is a Formula 1 car in the middle. Around the car are more tires. A canvas hangs on the wall. Michael Schumacher can be seen on the canvas with a trophy. In the background are large windows and an elevator.

Experience sporting history

The permanent exhibition at the German Sport & Olympia Museum offers school classes a lively introduction to 2,500 years of sporting history – from ancient times to the present day. Covering more than 2,700 m², pupils can discover unique exhibits such as Muhammad Ali's autographed boxing gloves, Michael Schumacher's Formula 1 racing car and Paralympic champion Markus Rehm's prosthetic leg. Interactive stations, themed rooms and authentic objects bring historical events, Olympic moments and values such as fairness and respect to life. The exhibition invites visitors to understand sport as an important cultural phenomenon and to critically reflect on current issues such as doping.
