Gypsy Boxer
A THEATRE PLAY BY RIKE REINIGER
Rike Reiniger's play is based on the life story of Johann Wilhelm "Rukeli" Trollmann, who became German middleweight champion in June 1933. Because his style of boxing was views as "un-German" in the eyes of the Nazis, he was summarily stripped of the title. This shows all the more impressively how personal courage and reliable friendship can come to fruition even in times of oppression and terror. The fate of the Sinto-German boxer is told from the point of view of his friend Hans, who is embodied in a grandiose way by Cologne actor Andreas Kunz. In flashbacks, he remembers "Rukeli's" spectacular performances, his great successes and the ultimately hopeless struggle for his career and his life.
The performance of the gypsy boxer will take place in the boxing ring in our permanent exhibition. A few selected exhibits on the history of "Rukeli" Trollmann are also presented here.
